How to Use Bed Cradles and Footboards

GENERAL INFORMATION:

What are bed cradles and footboards? Bed cradles and footboards are devices that attach to your bed. They keep sheets and blankets from touching and rubbing your legs or feet. Footboards will also keep your feet in proper position while you are in bed.

Why do I need a bed cradle or footboard? A bed cradle or footboard can help if your skin is sensitive. The devices also help with air circulation to your feet to help keep your skin dry. You may need a bed cradle or footboard if you have burns, open skin sores, or infections. You may need a bed cradle or a footboard if you have certain injuries or conditions, such as paraplegia or a pressure ulcer. You may also need a bed cradle or footboard if you lie in bed for long periods of time.

How do I use a bed cradle or footboard? Your caregiver or home health nurse will help you choose and set up the device safely. Drape the bedcovers over the cradle or footboard and tuck them under the mattress to keep them in place. Move the footboard so that your feet rest against it when you are lying in bed. Use pillows and folded blankets as padding if the board cannot be moved close enough to support your feet. Pad the footboard with a towel or a blanket if the board is bare. Put a rolled towel or a pillow next to each foot so that they do not fall to the sides.

When should I contact my caregiver? Contact your caregiver or home health nurse if:
